Brief summary of the show

In this episode, Andrew Colsky talks with John Sammon, CEO of Sixth City Marketing, about where AI helps with content and where leaning on it too heavily makes a firm blend into the crowd.

John shares the changes his agency made to its own website, including refocusing content on its real expertise and reviewing older posts that drifted away from its services. They also discuss short interviews as a way to capture the stories and answers generic content misses.

For lawyers and other professionals, the takeaway is clear: your own voice and experience are what AI search and clients reward. Before you automate another batch of content, ask what it says that a competitor couldn't.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Welcome to Be Picked. This is the podcast where we talk with mostly small businesses and some large businesses about how to get found out there on the web and especially with the new AI search that's going on. Everybody's using it, so are you going to be there? That's the question. we do this show, we bring on guests who are experts in the field. Today we have John Sammon He is the CEO of Sixth City Marketing. That's Sixth S I X. TH City Marketing. And he's going to share with us some of the things that he's learned along the way and things that he does to help his clients out. So John, welcome to the show.

John Sammon: Hey, it's great to be here. Thanks for having me.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah. So I actually, gosh, just last night I was out at an event with people learning more about AI and interacting with customers and things. And on one hand, it's amazing to see how far AI has come in such a short time. you still have people that are a little bit hesitant or don't understand it well or are afraid because it's you know something that they're not aware of. and then you have the other people who have embraced it and they're, you know, way down the road with it. And the the problem that I see out there happening today, I call AI AI search sort of the new gold rush because the things that you used to do to be found by Google to get into that list of sites that popped up is very different from what you do to be found by AI. And if you do the stuff you need to be found by AI today, you're gonna be way ahead of the pack and everybody else will always be trying to catch up. That's my version of it. Is that something that you agree with or do you have a different take? And tell us how what you've been seeing.

John Sammon: Yeah, no. you know, I i in just in general, it's just amazing how things have evolved over the last two years. So I I'm right on the same track with you, in terms of how people are using it, how in depth they are getting with it. And I think that's a great thing to start off with in terms of the conversation here today, because it's you go, Okay, well there's some on the spectrum that are just kind of just testing it out, but some are really, really in depth with how they're using it. in what types of questions they're you know just throwing out as prompts. And for how, you know, just kind of taking that away and seeing how it's progressed, you know, it has become a major focus in conversations with our clients and certainly we're offering as it as a service is how do we stay in front of people you know as they're searching the web and seeing these AI overviews. And certainly using you know, the LLMs like Claude and Chat GPT to get in their specific searches. And I think that's really just a a part of it is being aware of how much it's being used and how in depth people the r the resear the research is saying that they're getting into prompts and conversations as they look for products and services on the web. it's really, really interesting and it it continues to evolve and it'll be So I think that's the biggest thing is, you know, as as business owners are trying to grow their businesses, what do they need to do? you know, that they've done in the past, and maybe a little bit differently, to just try to stay ahead of the game. and then, you

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Mm-hmm.

John Sammon: know, certainly their competition as well. 'cause that's always one of the first things that you know, starts the conversation is, wait a minute, this guy's showing up ahead of me, you know, you know, when I'm doing this, this and this. So, you know, there's a lot of ways People start that conversation in terms of like how they can improve. But definitely seeing that, you know, I would say this is that for what we're doing for our clients, there's still some very fundamental SEO things that work. But there's definitely some new wrinkles over especially over the last year that we've implemented that have really helped our clients, specifically with staying in front of not only the traditional search engines, but Certainly LA the any of the L L M's AI the w the AI focus, if you will.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So, you know, one of the things that I think a lot of people don't think about, and I'm guilty of it as well, is I don't think about this until I realize I should think about it. Is we talk about people like you and me helping other people to be found in all. But in reality, we're both businesses. We both need to be found out there just like we have to help our clients get found out there. So I'm curious if you, you know, want to share sort of your story. What do you, you know, here's this is not what you're telling people to do. This is what you actually do. What do you do as a business owner to maximize your visibility out there on the web?

John Sammon: Yeah, I I love telling this story because we do for ourselves what we do for our clients. And we've grown as a business over the last fifteen years doing these types of things. you know, and we invested we have a full time person on our staff who's wonderful, that has been specifically focused on helping us be found. I would say this because it's it's the timely subject that we're talking about. over the last year, especially beginning of the year, because there was a there was an algorithm update at the beginning of the year that impacted the AI overviews and certainly how you're you're found from an overall standpoint, to where we really had to focus our content on the the key themes of our business. Because previously, you know, you could write content maybe with a different focus. of trying to gain links and talking about things maybe a little bit unrelated to your business, especially if you're trying to rank in a local market. You know, you may have touched on some things like, hey, we love these are the top five you know, coffee shops or you know things to experience in this market to try to get some some local locally focused links coming to your website. Goog Google and the the the LMs really want you to be hyper focused on the themes and subjects. So a lot of cleanup we had to do on that front with our website. I think a lot of things that we've focused on recently as well. This is also for us and our clients, is just really doing some for what I call content pruning. you know, there are blog posts out there that you've put up there from more than maybe one to two years. And you know AO, GEO, SEO now really involves like look, they want very timely things and fresh things being put up on your website.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Mm-hmm.

John Sammon: so those are two things in terms of like content that we we make recommendations on, restructuring our content. you know, this goes back to, I know I'm I'm getting in depth on some very applicable things, but that's what people want to hear, right? Is what do I what

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah, no, it's important. Right, right.

John Sammon: do I do right now? I'm very invested in this. I think restructuring the content to make it you know very indexable, easily digestible, not only by all of these entities looking at your site, but also people, right? they want to be able to come to the site, scan it, and understand not only what you do, but what stands out about you, and then certainly get common questions answered. you know, to to really check some boxes to I guess could say help them get all the research they need, for them to feel good to reach out and have a conversation. And the last thing I'll say is that we've invested a lot of time now on the video side. so, you know, especially lately, at least initially showcasing some very fundamental things about our organization, and then also some culture things. 'cause I know from reading about your, you know, in in listening to your previous podcast, some of it's about like, okay, we're not just trying to reach customers, we're trying to hire good people. You know, so some of the videos have been focused on our culture. but now specifically, we really want to get out you know, more information about our people. we have some great people on our team. and then certainly things that we're encountering on the expertise side as well. So I think really that's where we see you know, and I I know you're you're big on this as well, is the evolution of where you need to be online is to really diversify what you're doing. the game of, you know, just popping out some content and, you know,

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Hmm.

John Sammon: getting some high level links pointing to your website, like things worked pretty well years and years ago. but it's a different game now. so y you you have to do some different stuff. You know, so that's kind of where we're at. in terms of what we're doing for our ourselves.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Uh-huh.

John Sammon: and certainly there there are many things that we're doing, those things and more for our clients to essentially help them get found with the specific focus of driving more sales for their business.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Right, right. And you know I think one of the interesting things that really kind of strikes me as I get deeper into this is you think back five or ten years and people would be thinking, my gosh, I gotta go work with someone who can make my website look good, who can do all this SEO stuff, whatever that means and you

John Sammon: Yeah.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: know, but I'll I'll pay them, I'll invest in it, I'll Get it done,

John Sammon: Yeah.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: and then I'm finished. That that was part of the thought process. And then for the next 10

John Sammon: Right. Right.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: years, I'm never gonna touch my website. and now comes along the new kid in town, AI. And

John Sammon: Yeah.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: you know, the the data change. I I I do a a weekly live show, an update on what's going on with AI this week. So I stay right on the cutting edge of what's happening. And I'll tell you the numbers each week change. So The most current info that I have is when AI is looking for data or looking for answers and it's searching the web, it's if your content is not like 30 to 90 days young, you know, that's what it's gonna go for first. So you can have some

John Sammon: Right.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: great content that's now getting a little bit, you know, older, a couple months, and it's

John Sammon: Great, great.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: already, you know, it's not on the top of the radar. So The point is you have to continue to put proper stuff out there, not junk, not meaningless drivel, because

John Sammon: Right.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: that's going to be pushed down to the bottom. It's got to be unique. It's got to be citable. It's got to be credible type of evidence. And you got to keep doing it. Now that's a whole different industry.

John Sammon: no no doubt. You know, and I that introduces a whole nother element to small business owners in that like, wait, I have to be on camera. you know, and it was I I go back even a couple of I mean more than five years ago where you know we were i in the traditional SEO realm, we were writing a ton of content. And you know, they they had the business owner would not even have any pictures of the staff or the team on the site. And it's like, you what, we're gonna come out there, we're gonna set up something online and And we're just gonna do an interview with you. we'll chop it up and create you know a two to three minute just high-level overview piece. and it was such an asset to the company even back then, to where look, you're putting a face to the business, you're talking to your background, there's instant credibility from just doing that, versus your competitors. now, for our clients, and and certainly what we're encouraging people to do too. Is that we will set up a time, much like what we're doing right now, and we will just pepper them with questions. you know, that reflect questions that they would get. And certainly we're doing a ton of research on this in any stage of their sales pipeline, so that they can speak to it. And you you know how it goes when you're having a conversation with someone, is that sometimes you're gonna go off topic to speak to a specific experience. and and then that just that just adds to the credibility aspect of really establishing who you are and what you do, back going back to that branding and then something you know, you will separate yourself from your business, especially small businesses. So

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Uh-huh.

John Sammon: I I c I couldn't agree more that that's such a huge thing to to try to at least do experimentally for local business owners for sure.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah. And you know, I I another thing that I think is interesting to point out to the audience is I I I kind of feel like, you know, our screens should be sort of black and white, meaning to to show the differences, 'cause I want to explain what I mean by that. So you are very good at marketing. You're very good at getting people out there, getting them seen, you know, all the things that you were just talking about. Important stuff, you know, if a client is gonna find you, they need to feel comfortable with you, they need to do all these things that you're describing. And that's one side of the screen. And then you come over to my side of the screen, and my side of the screen is, yes, I agree that's important. However, my focus is AI. Finding you because AI is going to be the one that recommends somebody. And right now, if they're not recommending you, who are they recommending? Your competition. And AI, so when you're putting content out on the web, yes, you're putting it out for the people who come to the web to look at it, but you're also putting it out for AI. And the stuff that AI is interested in and the stuff that AI draws from, it's a little bit different than what your clients might draw from. And this especially comes about when we talk about video and stuff, because it's just such a great example. AI

John Sammon: Sh absolutely.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: draws heavily on YouTube as one of its sources. And people are so concerned. I I'll have people who are so concerned about my video's gotta be perfect. I one hair can't be out of place. And I'm like,

John Sammon: Ha ha ha

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: number one, your video should not be perfect because it's if people want to hire a real human, and real humans are not perfect. so if you're too overdone, people are gonna skip over you. But the real issue is guess what? And this is a secret that nobody knows, and I'm gonna expose it right now over the air. AI

John Sammon: Ha ha ha.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Does not watch videos. my god, it doesn't watch videos? It reads the text from your video, but it does not watch your video. You could put up a video of a cat chasing a bird and it doesn't care. It cares what the text is. Now from a marketing perspective, yeah, people watch videos and it's a whole different thing that you have to be concerned about. But if you don't have quality text that's gonna be something that AI really is looking for, you gotta have both sides of the equation here.

John Sammon: I couldn't agree more. Yeah, and even going back to your point about it being not being perfect. You know, some of the research even shows like even pulling up your phone, right, and just recording, you know, certainly something credible like you're saying, but recording something on the fly or just keeping it very, very short, brief, but insightful, can can help even more so than just something where you're sitting down in a studio, and recording as well. So yeah. No, I I you know, every That's where you have to be now. You know, it like every year it's something new, something changes. And it's certainly something that you have to if you ha if you're not doing it now, you have to experiment with. For sure.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah. Yeah. And it's it's it's you know, it used to be every year, now it's every week. I mean the changes are just dramatic of what's happening.

John Sammon: Right. That's true. That's true. Yeah, I know I I just got back literally yesterday from a conference in Toronto, SEO I R L and you know that that was the the heart of the focus is everything on the AI side. certainly video was a part of that. but really talking about you know, businesses staying in front of the trends on the AI side. so it you know it's it's timely and and this is the year for that, right?

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Well, I I in gosh, in the next several months I have a a calendar full of conferences and things that I'm going to because there there's so much new information that needs to get out there and be shared. And

John Sammon: Yeah, absolutely.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: you know, from from every angle, from every angle. It's I mean, I don't think there's a conference out there today for anything that doesn't include some element of how AI is impacting whatever the field may be. So

John Sammon: Yep, and and where it will go, right? There's there's

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Right.

John Sammon: it it's really interesting to get people's feedback and opinions on where that's gonna go as well. So for

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah.

John Sammon: sure.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: So so if if a business comes to you today and they say, Hey, we we need to get started by being out there online. We we got nothing. We we haven't even like done a web we're zero.

John Sammon: Yeah.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: What do we need to do? What are your answers to them?

John Sammon: Yeah, you know, you you wanna do a bunch of stuff, right? I mean it just at from a high level perspective is that you need to and and again, I th I think it's it really just depends on whether they're trying to target people nationally or locally. but certainly it's still important to have a website and a web presence. you gotta also be on any of the social media channels, you know. And certainly you know, the core channels will be Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube as well. Certainly, you know, where you put more of your time will depend on your specific focus and target audience. if you're targeting people from a local perspective, if possible, it's helpful to have a physical location connected to a Google My Business profile. and then, you know, again, depending a lot of the times when we reach out or when people are talking to us. you know, we will deal with people who are just trying to focus on a specific area or location. so not only speaking to your background and experience, you know, also talking from a local I a local aspect as well. you know, and I I will say this is that, you know, we we where a lot of people are on on that front right now is that they are using AI, you know, you talk about like where everybody's at. you know, a lot of people now on the small business side are using AI pretty heavily. and especially on the content side to generate content. one because it saves a ton of time and even to some extent building their website. and why why would you not, right? It's a it's a tremendous asset to save time. but you have to do that very carefully because while it will help you get up and running it can essentially limit your ability to you in terms of your visibility, both in search engines and in AI. So you have to be I think that's the biggest thing that's gonna come in terms of trends is that there's an adoption of using AI internally for marketing and web purposes. But the thing is is that there's this this inclination that, okay, well it can do this, it can do all of these things. And we're putting it out there. And the reality is is that It can be helpful to a degree, but it can be and and then beyond that degree, it's like, well, this is actually kind of limiting what you can do in terms of who you can reach because you don't have a unique voice. It goes back to all the things that we talked about previously on the video side, you know, the things that you want to do differently to be found in AI and certainly in the search engines, that unique aspect, fresh new content. And so I think that's the biggest thing that we're seeing right now for people who are just getting up and running or trying to just take that next step. and so that's the I think of anything that I'd want to relay to people is that yeah, there it is a tremendous asset, but it will only help you get to a certain point. to where you you are gonna eventually need to write that content, and format it in a specific way, and be strategic about how. you organize your site and then certainly flowing into you know being prolific in terms of content, social media, and certainly ultimately like you talked about video as well.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah, and and you know, this is a another super hot topic that I think is important that people really understand is the like you're saying, a look, AI is is great in many, many, many regards. You can do so much with it that you couldn't have done previously. And yes, you can go and I see you know, every day all across the internet, people who are gonna use AI to just pump out content for you. Well, that was great in the first year maybe of AI. And now think about this and think about it really. If you have millions of people using AI to pump out content, and all it's doing is going to the web, pulling information, summarizing it, and pumping it back out, there's nothing new that you're creating. And the search engines realize that and they realize this is meaningless drivel. It's it's just Repeating the same stuff that's everywhere. And now instead of allowing that to destroy the internet, what they're doing is they're pushing it down. So by creating that stuff, you're actually getting worse results than if you just did a a live video of yourself on something. So that's

John Sammon: Right.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: an important thing. But but I'm not gonna talk bad about AI creating content because AI

John Sammon: Yeah.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: can be used to create content as long as it is. New, credible, supported, your own ideas, those types of things. And my company, we started with the credibility generator. And the credibility generator is a piece of software that'll do all this for you. And in the very beginning, it was generalized AI stuff until we realized, my God, the world is changing. And now we've taken that and we've turned it into something that that that creates highly credible information that is directly aimed At attracting the search engines that covers all the rules of what's necessary. so this is why I say there's some software out there that can really help you. There's a lot that's not gonna help you. And the best way to tell is look at the price. If somebody's charging you twenty-nine dollars to join my, you know, my my website every month and I'll pump out content. You get what you pay for these days. So

John Sammon: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. No, and I it's I I love that you added that in there. I you know, I just I like to throw that out there for the awareness factor, right? so yeah. No, I I I think that's gonna be a central theme is just kind of staying ahead of that and you know, it'll be interesting how it evolves next year, right?

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah, yeah. Right, right, exactly, exactly.

John Sammon: Or next week, like you said.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: So so for for you as a company, you know, who's in this business of getting people seen and getting people, you know, in front of their their their proper client, what do you see today as we're talking, what do you see as the most important things that your company is going to be focusing on to help your clients?

John Sammon: Yeah, you know, I I think it's kinda like one of goes back to the beginning of, you know, the basic properties of how why we why I started the firm and, you know, what we do to help people. It's ultimately marketing is an investment that needs to bring back sales. So I think to some extent when we start working with the clients, it's like, look, we really need to get an idea of a groundwork of what's coming in right now and getting an understanding of where it's coming from. Now there's certainly tools out there that will detect attribution and where things are coming from. But ultimately we work with the client to establish essentially a CRM where they're tracking everything that's coming in. we're talking about where the initial attribution is and then ultimately where in having conversations with their clients, again in a lead gen type of model, where they're coming from to ultimately assess. what the where where everything is coming from and how it's making a difference for the business on the sales side.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Uh-huh.

John Sammon: I would say this from an overall perspective, kind of like going back to what we had talked about, you need a blend of a variety of different things in trying to stay ahead of your competition and trying to gain more on the web side of things. So it goes back to uniqueness, it goes back to diversity, and then ultimately at the end of the day, it goes back to really paying attention to where people are coming from and where your investment is bringing the return from from an overall standpoint. And that's what we're doing to try to stay ahead of things on everything for our clients. But also too, you know, we're just we're we're very much glued to, you know, what new research is coming out, what trends are happening. As I mentioned to you as well, you know, we send four people from our team to this conference. We're pretty diligent about staying staying on top of that and sending key members of our team to these conferences. and certainly there are insights coming back from what we learn from working with our sixty plus clients as well. So

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Mm-hmm.

John Sammon: a key aspect is change, but also we've had a lot of success moving the needle for our clients and doing a variety of di different things that fall into the internet marketing scope. So

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Mm-hmm.

John Sammon: yeah.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: So, so, you know, continuing on this theme of sort of this new client who comes to you who's start who you know has has nothing and they're starting from scratch. Would what is your what what have you found in terms of I'm trying to figure out how to ask this question. How important is a website? And the reason I asked that is because of this. If I'm starting from scratch, do I want to make sure that I absolutely focus on having a website? Do I want to make sure that I eventually get a website, but I need to be doing some kind of social media first? What is your advice to them of w where

John Sammon: Mm-hmm.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: to even start with that?

John Sammon: Yeah, I still think you need a website. You know, and no matter how people find you, they're still gonna go back to doing their own research. And you know, like I said, whether it's whether you're trying to appease the AI, you know, the AI and the L L Ms or just people in general, is that they're doing some pretty thorough research and I think you still need to start with a website and populating that like you shouldn't, like we've talked about. I think once that's and you can still make it very fundamental to at least you know, say, hey, look, we are established, you know, we have all this credibility, you know, we have all these awards, you know, we're part of the chamber of commerce. That lends to the credibility of building your brand. I think that next y so, you know, to at least have that foundational element and then moving into being on you know, these specific social media channels, the YouTubes, that sort of thing. I still think it's a key anchor to have, to kind of pivot off of once you have those fundamentals and foundation in place.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Yeah, yeah. I mean it's it's it's you know, sort of the basic place that everybody's gonna be able to go to read more about you and contact you and learn more about you.

John Sammon: Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah. For sure.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: So yeah, well, all right, let me see here. So Basically, you know, I think we've gotten a a pretty good sense of of where to go and what to do and and and the other sense that I think we're taking we're giving people is that whatever we're saying today may be different next week. Actually will be different next week. I'll I'll go out on a live and I'll say that.

John Sammon: Absolutely. Absolutely, yeah.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: s so you you gotta stay up on it. However, I will say that on my website, on the B picked B E hyphen P I C K E D dot com website, we have a twenty question assessment that you can take and learn about your strengths and weaknesses in terms of being found by AI from that perspective. And doesn't cost you anything and it's really insightful what you'll what you'll see. It's kind of cool the the the outliner of the report. It looks looks really nice but it tells you information you need to know. So we encourage you to go there. You can simply go to also you can just go to get your aq dot com. But John, if somebody wanted to reach out to you and work with you, how do they find you?

John Sammon: Yeah, just visit our website, sixth city marketing dot com. you know, we have all of the information there, to be able to allow people to reach out to us. and call us, email or fill out a form or there's a prolific chat that pops up when you're on the site as well. you know, we just we really like to help people out and you know, I think that's where we start start is just, you know, hey, look, tell us what you need help with and we try transparent about what we see in terms of our initial assessment, and h how we think we can help.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: So now now now I'm gonna ask the the the final but the real question. So I I went to your website and the chat thing pops up and I think it says like not AI or something. So so tell us yeah, not a bot. So it

John Sammon: Not a bot.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: who who is it? Is there a real person there? Well like what is it?

John Sammon: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know, when we talk to companies, especially, you know, it's like, okay, look, it's you're getting it's one thing to get people to your website, it's whole nother thing to get them to contact you. And it's pretty prolific to have a chat pop up on a site. if you don't if you haven't tried that, it's very effective in starting conversations. but the assumption is inherently that it's a bot there, right? And so you know, initially when we started using it, You know, we had it set up just like anything and then eventually I I just put 'cause I was the one manning it. I just put a br here's my name in a parentheses I put not a bot, you know, and so at the very least people got a kick out of it. But I got all kinds of questions like, yeah, you're not a bot. What was the score of this game last week? So

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Ha ha ha.

John Sammon: there is somebody manning it on the site. It's either myself or Kaylee Terrence, who's our sales manager. but that's really, you know, that's the type of approach that we want to have on the customer service side is that Hey look, we're here, you know, you can start by asking us questions, hopefully relevant to marketing and digital marketing, but certainly we can handle any other questions just to test to see that we're a human being there. But I feel like people get a a huge kick out of that as well.

Andrew Colsky JD, LPC: Perfect. Okay. I was I was curious.

John Sammon: Yeah, absolutely.
